Nitish Reddy, Pat Cummins shine in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s thrilling win

The 23rd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 saw Punjab Kings (PBKS) hosting Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Tuesday (9th April). The match between the two teams took place at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh. 

Sunrisers Hyderabad emerged victorious in the 23rd match of the IPL 2024 as they outclassed Punjab Kings by 2 runs. They marked their second consecutive win in the tournament and bagged crucial points in the league.

Sunrisers Hyderabad were asked to bat first and it was a decent start for them with the bat. Travis Head (21) and Abhishek Sharma (16) batted with an aggressive mindset and it seemed that they were up for another big total on the board. 

But the wicket of Travis Head triggered the collapse for the Sunrisers Hyderabad as they lost wickets in quick succession. They found themselves tottering at 100/5 and it seemed that they would not even post 150. However, Nitish Kumar Reddy oozed his class with the bat and bailed his team out of trouble. 

Nitish struggled with his innings early on but with the way he shifted gears and put his team in a good position. The batter played some magnificent shots in his innings and ended with innings of 64 runs off 37 balls at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh. 

Abdul Samad (25) supported him well as the duo together added 50 50-run partnership. Shahbaz Ahmed (14*) in the end hit some blows and made sure that Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a competitive total on the board. They ended with 182/9, which didn’t seem possible at one stage. 

For Punjab Kings, Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of 4/29. Apart from him Sam Curran and Harshal Patel also picked two wickets each while Rabada picked one.

Punjab Kings were off to the worst possible start to their innings. They lost Shikhar Dhawan (14), Jonny Bairstow, and Prabhsimran Singh (4) early and were left tottering at 20/3. Bhuvneshwar Kumar oozed his class with the new ball and put the opposition under pressure. 

Sam Curran (29) and Sikander Raza (28) tried to bail the team out of trouble and played vital knocks for the team. However, they too lost their wickets at the crucial juncture of the team as Punjab Kings was left tottering at 91/5. Jitesh Sharma (19) hit some blows but couldn’t carry on. 

Shashank Singh (46*) and Ashutosh Sharma (33*) give their best for the team. They took the game till the last over and even attempted to score 29 runs, which were needed off the last over. But fell short of the target by just two runs.
