Earlier, India clinched their first ever Test victory in Cape Town to draw level the two-match series 1-1 after suffering an innings defeat in the first match. The match also established a new record for the shortest Test in the history of cricket, spanning only 642 balls.
Ashwin on Friday was nominated for the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award along with Australian players Travis Head, Usman Khawaja and England senior batsman Joe Root.
Ashwin ended the year as the top Test bowler in the ICC Rankings, taking 41 wickets at a striking average of 17.02 and recorded the most five-wicket hauls by anyone in Tests — four.
