The 39th match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 took place between Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers. The game between the teams took place at the Optus Stadium in Perth and it saw the visitors clinching the nail-biter with 3 wickets.
Perth Scorchers didn’t have a great start after winning the toss and batting first. Stephen Eskinazi went back after getting retired hurt and soon Sam Whiteman (17) perished too. Josh Inglis (18) tried to get going but couldn’t get going as the hosts were left tottering at 52/2.
Skipper Aaron Hardie and Laurie Evans then led the rescue charge and put Sydney Sixers under pressure. They bailed the team out of trouble and added 85 runs for the fourth wicket putting Perth Scorchers on top after losing early wickets in the game.
While Hardie ended with 32 runs, Evans scored 72 runs. Cooper Connolly (37*) played a vital cameo in the end that powered Perth Scorchers to a total of 197 runs. For Sydney Sixers, Ben Dwarshuis was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of 2/23. Apart from him, Jackson Bird and Sean Abbott bagged one wicket each.
Chasing the target, Sydney Sixers were off the flyer. Daniel Hughes and James Vince (22) oozed their class and didn’t put a foot wrong. They added 65 runs for the opening stand before the latter was back in the end. After the first wicket, Josh Phillippe took center stage and made sure that his side didn’t lose momentum.
Hughes (74) along with Phillippe (32) added 59 runs for the second wicket and kept Sydney Sixers in the chase. But they both lost their wickets quickly and the team came under pressure. However, skipper Moises Henriques then played a blinder.
Despite the wickets falling at the other end, Henriques kept smashing bowlers and made his team home. He ended with the knock of unbeaten 47 runs as Sydney Sixers completed a sensational 3-wicket win. For Perth, Jason Behrendorff picked three wickets whereas Aaron Hardie bagged two scalps.
