The Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W) captain Meg Lanning couldn’t control her emotions after her side lost the final of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 against the Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bangalore Women (RCB-W) on Sunday, March 17 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Meg Lanning & Co. had a terrific campaign in the WPL 2024 just like the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W) dominated and finished at the top to qualify directly for the final. DC-W started off with the defeat against Mumbai Indians Women but it didn’t take them much time to bounce back strong.
DC-W were absolutely brilliant with their performance in the next few matches and they went on a 4-match winning streak, before losing a thriller to UP Warriorz by just one run. Delhi Capitals Women quickly forgot the loss and moved on to register two back-to-back wins to finish the league stage on high.
The batters of the Delhi Capitals Women were excellent in the league stage and four of them – Meg Lanning, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Alice Capsey – were in the top 10 leading run-getters list. The skipper Meg Lanning was the top performer with the bat for her side. Also, Delhi Capitals Women bowlers were equally good as three players – Marizanne Kapp, Jess Jonassen, and Radha Yadav – were in the top 10 wicket-takers list this season.
Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals Women had a torrid outing in the final of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 against Smriti Mandhana & Co.
After getting off to a good start, they faced an awful batting collapse and were bundled out for 113. The total was too small to defend, but the DC-W bowlers gave it all and took the game to the final over. However, Ellyse Perry and Richa Ghosh remained unbeaten and helped Royal Challengers Bangalore Women win the match by 8 wickets.

Speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Meg Lanning expressed her disappointment over the defeat in the final. She said:
“Obviously disappointing not to get it done. Finals are about playing well on the day. Congratulations to RCB – you outplayed us tonight. It all happened relatively quickly as it tends to do. As we’ve seen in this tournament, crazy things happen. Full credit to RCB, they fought back really nicely and deserved the win.”
Meg Lanning further said that they did a lot of right things in the season but it wasn’t enough to lift the trophy. The legendary cricketer also thanked the support staff for their assistance throughout the competition. She stated:
“We did a lot right. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be. A lot of effort went from a lot of the people. Want to thank the support staff. Cricket is a funny game – you win some, you lose some.”
