NEW DELHI: England’s vice captain, Ollie Pope, has voiced his preference for a rank turner in the upcoming fourth Test against India, stating that it would create a more balanced contest by minimizing the toss’s impact on the outcome.
Speaking to reporters, Pope expressed his views, saying, “If it does spin from ball one, it takes the toss out of the equation, then it’s an even playing field.”
Pope emphasized the importance of having wicket-taking options on a spinning track, especially with England’s young spinners showing promise. “If it does do a fair bit like we expect it to, then it gets us into the game,” he added optimistically.
Regarding the potential inclusion of a fourth spinner in India’s lineup, Pope speculated, “Potentially (India will bring a fourth spinner)… With Jasprit missing, they might go down that avenue, Axar Patel is definitely an option for them.”
Describing the Ranchi pitch, Pope noted, “The pitch looks interesting, very ‘platey’. The cracks in the wicket aren’t just cracks, there are separate bits of ground that could open up with a lot of sun on them.”
In addition, Pope hinted at the possibility of Ben Stokes resuming his all-rounder duties for England after not bowling since June. “There is definitely a chance… Let’s see how he pulls up tomorrow and see how he goes,” Pope remarked.
Stokes was seen bowling during the team’s training session on Wednesday, raising hopes of his return to bowling duties for the fourth Test.
The fourth Test between India and England is set to commence in Ranchi, with both teams eager to secure a crucial victory in the ongoing series.
