Vadodara Police, last Saturday (March 2), booked former India women’s cricket team coach Tushar Arothe after they found Rs 1 crore was his house. The police seized the whole amount before lodging a case against the former coach.
According to reports, the Special Operations Group (SOG) recovered a huge cash pile stored in ‘grey bags’ in Tushar Arothe’s residence in the Pratapgunj area of Vadodara. In addition to recovering Rs 1 crore at the coach’s house, the police also seized around Rs 38 lakhs from two of his acquaintances.
Tushar Arothe was in charge of the Indian women’s team when they enjoyed a dream run in the 2017 World Cup and made it to the final before losing to hosts England. However, he has been garnering attention for all the wrong reasons since stepping down from the post in 2018. He has been involved in several criminal cases since parting ways with the Indian team.
“We received information that a huge amount of cash had reached Arothe’s home following which we reached his residence. We found a bag full of cash that amounted to Rs 1.01 crore. We also found another Rs 38 lakh from his two acquaintances,” SOG Inspector VS Patel was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
Case filed against Tushar Arothe:
The Inspector further revealed that the police had booked Tushar Arothe under CrPC 102. He also revealed that the former India women’s team head coach received the money from his son Rishi and could not give a satisfactory answer when asked about the big amount.
“Arothe’s son Rishi had sent him the cash. When we questioned him about the cash on Sunday, Arothe couldn’t give a satisfactory reply. So, we seized the cash and filed a case under CrPC 102 at Sayajigunj police station,” said the Inspector.
At present, neither Tushar Arothe nor his acquaintances have been placed under arrest. However, the former cricketer will have to explain about the cash in court. The latest case has only extended his run-ins with the law due to financial scandals.
In 2019, he was one of the 19 arrested people from a local cafe for an alleged involvement in an IPL betting racket. The accused were later granted bail by the court. Before becoming a coach, Tushar Arothe plied his trade for Baroda in first-class cricket. An allrounder, he played 114 first-class games and 51 List-A games. He scored over 6000 runs and picked up 225 wickets in red-ball cricket before retiring in 2003.
