Former South African all-rounder Lance Klusener has been appointed by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as an assistant coach for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Klusener will be joining head coach Justin Langer and fellow assistant coach Sridharan Sriram.
It may be noted that Klusener is also the head coach of LSG’s South African franchise Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20. The former cricketer has plenty of coaching knowledge. He has also been consultant coach for the Delhi and Tripura teams in domestic cricket and was batting coach of Mumbai Indians (MI) apart from being a part of the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise.
Last year, Klusener was at the helm as coach as Guyana Amazon Warriors won their maiden Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title. He has also had coaching stints at the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), with Rajshahi Kings as well as the Lyca Kovai Kings in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).
Speaking of international cricket, he has provided his coaching services to Afghanistan, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
As a player, Klusener played 49 Tests and 171 ODIs for South Africa between 1996 and 2004 and was among the plethora of all-rounders in the Proteas’ outfit in that decade. Widely regarded as one of the finest all-rounders in white-ball cricket, Klusener was also the Player of the Tournament in the 1999 World Cup.
Sharing an official press release on their website, Lucknow Super Giants confirmed Klusener’s appointment and wrote, “Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have added South African legend Lance Klusener to their formidable roster of coaches for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Klusener joins the team as an assistant coach and will work closely with head coach Justin Langer during the upcoming IPL season.
“We wish him a fantastic upcoming IPL campaign and are sure he will contribute greatly to the franchise during his time in India,” LSG’s official statement on the appointment added.
Speaking of Lucknow Super Giants, they made their IPL debut in the 2022 season and have reached the playoffs in both editions that they have featured in. However, they have been ousted in the Eliminator both times.
LSG will begin their IPL 2024 campaign with a match against 2008 champions Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur on March 24. Recently, the KL Rahul-led franchise appointed Nicholas Pooran as its vice-captain.
