Melvin Van Peebles: ‘Godfather of black cinema’ dies aged 89

Van Peebles, recognized for Seventies movies Watermelon Man and Candy Sweetback’s Baadasssss Track, died on Tuesday night surrounded by family members at his house in New York, in response to a press release.

The pioneering director, actor, composer, author and novelist has been described because the ‘godfather of black cinema’.

Actor Mario Van Peebles, the filmmaker’s son and long-time artistic collaborator, stated: “Dad knew that Black photos matter. If an image is price a thousand phrases, what was a film price?

“We wish to be the success we see, thus we have to see ourselves being free. True liberation didn’t imply imitating the coloniser’s mentality.

“It meant appreciating the ability, magnificence and interconnectivity of all folks.”

Van Peebles’s dying was introduced in a joint assertion from his household, The Criterion Assortment of status motion pictures of which his movies have been included, and the artwork home distributor Janus Movies.
